Description

As I've tried learning to draw humans, the one thing I've never been able to manage is drawing actual RL people, at least not in my own style. So I thought I'd finally buckle down and give it a solid shot, after a lot of fits and starts. Community has become one of my favorite TV series as of late, and it seemed like a good place to start, and it isn't just because Joel McHale is hot (but that was part of it!)

Feeling a bit mixed on the results, but it came out overall better than I thought. My goal was to try and be as cartoony as possible, and I have no idea how to accomplish that and still be recognizeable (I've no interest in caricature, though I suppose it's related). Alison Brie and Jim Rash are the closest to what I was aiming for. 
I started by tracing the photo refs until I knew which features I wanted, then after a few practice overlays, I tried to redraw them below. 

PS: Dangit, Season 6 not expected til March? ARRRGGGHHHH!

- You managed to moderate Chevy Chase’ super scary Dick Cheney/Karl Rove jowls and round head, thank heavens. Plus he should wish to have lips in real life. His current IMDB photo is scary.

- Shirley/Yvette Nicole Brown’s hair is looking especially good.

- Good job with Abed/Dani Pudi, I see that wide-eyed expression a lot from him.

- Joel McHale WISHES he had that superhero chin and sharp cheekbones. And a serious, determined brow.

- Funny optical illusion- Ken Jeong’s shirt looks kind of like prison orange, but that would be more of an “Arrested Development” vibe.


I think you did get the cartoony feel without going into actual caricature, since I also find caricature a little disturbing, unless it is done masterfully. But those carnival profile caricatures with the giant heads and big glistening eyes do make me nervous.
